My name is João, John in English. I'm dual Swiss/Portuguese citizen but I was born in Lisbon, Portugal on 7th June 1960, the third of 3 brothers. My father was accepted into three universities to study Geography, Medicine (where he met my mother) and into the Naval School. After 2 years he decided to continue with the subject that offered better economic prospects - the Navy –which worked better for starting his marriage to my mother. My mother completed her medical training and became a well-known rheumatologist.
I live in Yvorne, a small village of vineyards, in the Chablis region at the foot of the Swiss Alps. I am very attached to this village and the local culture. I am married, with 3 children, and, at the moment, I'm proud to have one grandson, 2 nieces, 2 nephews, and 7 great-nephews and nieces in Switzerland, Portugal, Britain and Holland.
After studying Design and Graphic Arts I began my professional life as a graphic artist. However I have spent almost the last 20 years as a specialist teacher of the disabled. Following specific courses in Switzerland I dedicated my time to teaching children, and later adults and the elderly, who are on the autistic spectrum, with Down’s Syndrome, with cerebral/motor disability and those with motor neurone disease.
I have always been interested in sport, such as rugby, sailing, diving, skiing and hiking in the mountains. More recenty I have enjoyed gardening in my Yvorne property and walking. I have always been interested in history, social sciences and the culture and philosophy of different places. I have had the chance to learn several European languages, although unfortunately not Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Tibetan or Nepalese wich where praticle to contact people over my journey.
Life has given me the opportunity to travel widely and to value different cultures in Europe, North Africa and the USA.
After the natural deaths of my parents and the more dramatic deaths of my 2 brothers and some of my friends, I have gradually, returned to reconsider certain values in life and to my own Awareness of Life. This « Along The Road » project is born out of a long period of reflection and towards personal renewal.
